I recently read Donald Passman’s All You Need to Know About the Music Business almost cover to cover, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most valuable resources out there for musicians.
The first sections are essential — they explain, in plain English, how the music industry really works. Contracts, publishing, royalties… all the things most of us don’t learn when we’re just focused on making songs. These chapters alone can save you from some very costly mistakes.
From there, the book goes deeper into everything from record deals and management to touring, merchandising, and even sync licensing. It’s written in a way that makes it easy to dip in and out — you don’t have to memorize every page. In fact, Passman himself encourages skipping ahead to the chapters that matter to you at your stage in the journey.
That’s why I see it as both a guidebook and a reference manual. Early on, it helps you lay a solid foundation. Later, it’s the book you’ll keep coming back to whenever you need clarity on a new challenge.
If you’re a musician who wants to treat your art as both passion and business, this book is a must-have — whether you grab the Kindle version or a physical copy.
