If you’re buying your first electric guitar, you’ve probably already fallen into the YouTube rabbit hole. Everyone’s got an opinion, and half of them will tell you to “save up for a Fender.”
Here’s our take: don’t. Not yet.
For most beginners and even many experienced players, a well-chosen Squier is the smartest first guitar you can buy. If you haven’t yet read our post on how to select your first guitar, check it out for a broader view before deciding.
Squier is owned by Fender, and many of its models are based on the same classic designs: the Stratocaster, Telecaster, and Jazzmaster. The main difference is in materials and manufacturing, not musicality.
The Smart Budget Pick: Squier Affinity
If you’re on a tighter budget, the Squier Affinity is one of the best choices around. It’s not the cheapest model, but it’s far from “junk.” What makes the Affinity worth considering is how much better it can become with the right setup. A professional adjustment of the frets, string height, and intonation makes a big difference.
We actually own an Affinity here in the studio, and a proper setup by a pro turned it from an average beginner guitar into something genuinely inspiring to play. With a good setup, it feels comfortable, stays in tune, and gives you that real Fender feel without spending a fortune.
The Step-Up Option: Classic Vibe and Beyond
If your budget allows a bit more, the Squier Classic Vibe series is where things get impressive. These guitars use Alnico pickups, have smoother fretwork, and vintage-style hardware that gives them a true Fender character.
The Classic Vibe models sound great, feel great, and are good enough for rehearsals or even small gigs. And if you ever decide to move up to a Fender, the transition will feel completely natural.
Squier guitars are also easy to resell or upgrade, with plenty of online support and replacement parts available. You’re joining a big, supportive community of players who know how to make these guitars shine.
Our Recommendation
If your budget is limited, go for the Squier Affinity and invest in a professional setup.
If you can spend a little more, the Squier Classic Vibe is hard to beat.
Both offer great tone, solid playability, and that unmistakable Fender feel without the high price tag.
